    Overcoming Poverty through Digital Inclusion

    Get PDF
A growing body of research is showing how digital inclusion can help communities overcome poverty and injustice. The main challenge lies in how best to achieve this goal. The authors argue that digital inclusion must occur in two distinct stages. The first stage is digital literacy, accomplished with the Symbiotic Computer (SC)-smartphones and tablets. The second stage will be professional capacity-building, accomplished with the more traditional Personal Computer (PC)

Differentiated bank strategies across the territory: an exploratory analysis

This paper aims to investigate to what extent there is a differentiated regional bank strategy in the Brazilian economy. Based on the Post Keynesian theory of regional liquidity preference (Dow, 1993), the paper analyses consolidate balance sheets of banks’ branches from several Brazilian regions. Through the analysis of some indicators that were built using the data, the article finds evidence for the thesis that the Brazilian Bank System’s strategy is heterogeneous across space. Furthermore, we conclude that this behaviour reinforces existing uneven regional patterns of development of the economy.bank strategy, regional liquidity preference, regional economics, development.

Once acquainted with the modern information and communication tools made available with the advent of the Internet, five Brazilian rural communities participating in a pilot project to develop a self-sustaining telecenter model, engaged in citizen journalism using inexpensive digital video cameras. Community members used Web 2.0 collaborative tools to post short videos on the telecenter portal. The 95 video blogs published between September 2006 and May 2008 recorded various aspects of community life, including religious celebrations, oral history arts and crafts traditions, folklore, and envirnmental concerns. This study evaluates the impact of video blogging in these communities

Dissertation submitted in Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia of Universidade Nova de Lisboa for the degree of Master of Biomedical EngineeringBackground: The new clinically available arterial spin labelling (ASL) sequences present some advantages relatively to the commonly used blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) method for functional brain studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), namely the fact of being potentially quantitative and more reproducible. Purpose: The main aim of this work was to evaluate the functional use of a commercial ASL sequence implemented on a 3 Tesla MRI system (Siemens, Verio) in the Imaging Department of Hospital da Luz. The first aim was to obtain a functional validation of this technique by comparison with the BOLD contrast, using a number of different approaches. The second aim was to accomplish perfusion quantification, by resolving some important quantification issues. Materials and Methods: Fifteen adult volunteers participated in a single functional imaging session using three different protocols: one using BOLD and two using ASL. The subjects performed a motor finger tapping task and the data analysis was performed using Siemens Neuro3D and FSL (FMRIB’s Software Library). The location and variability of the activated areas were analysed in MNI (Montereal Neurological Institute) standard space. Results: Topographic agreement between the activated regions obtained by BOLD and ASL was found. However, the results show that inter-subject variability and distance to the hand motor cortex were smaller when measured with ASL as compared with BOLD fMRI. Quantitative studies revealed that ASL allows the calculation of cerebral blood flow (CBF), both at baseline and upon functional activation. Conclusion: The results suggest that the functional imaging protocols using ASL produce comparable results to a conventional BOLD protocol, with the additional advantages of reduced inter-subject variability, better spatial specificity and quantification possibilities

Playable and collaborative art : the MonMazes case-study

    Get PDF
MonMazes is a collaborative and physical game inspired by Piet Mondrian paintings that consists of two benches with smart seat cushions that track the user's seating movements. The objective is to guide a ball through the mazes/paintings until the final point. The process of MonMazes' development was driven towards an exploration of collaborative possibilities together with a computer-supported physical user interface, focusing on the interdependency between players who shared a common goal. We start this article by discussing the social aspects of gameplay, the collaboration and interdependence between players, ending with a description of MonMazes project

Towards Understanding Political Interactions on Instagram

Online Social Networks (OSNs) allow personalities and companies to communicate directly with the public, bypassing filters of traditional medias. As people rely on OSNs to stay up-to-date, the political debate has moved online too. We witness the sudden explosion of harsh political debates and the dissemination of rumours in OSNs. Identifying such behaviour requires a deep understanding on how people interact via OSNs during political debates. We present a preliminary study of interactions in a popular OSN, namely Instagram. We take Italy as a case study in the period before the 2019 European Elections. We observe the activity of top Italian Instagram profiles in different categories: politics, music, sport and show. We record their posts for more than two months, tracking "likes" and comments from users. Results suggest that profiles of politicians attract markedly different interactions than other categories. People tend to comment more, with longer comments, debating for longer time, with a large number of replies, most of which are not explicitly solicited. Moreover, comments tend to come from a small group of very active users. Finally, we witness substantial differences when comparing profiles of different parties.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figure

This cross-sectional study was aimed at describing the pattern of medicine consumption of adults and elderly, users of the primary health care services in Lorena, state of São Paulo. Information with regard to the following characteristics was collected: social-demographic data, the reason for seeking the service, medical prescription and medication used in the last month, where this medication was purchased, self-medication and use of homeopathic medication. 766 individuals were interviewed, 66% of them women. More than 40% informed having a chronic disease and most of them considered themselves to be in good health. Approximately 70% of the studied population used drugs following medical prescription with a medicament/person average of 1.5, most of them for high blood pressure. This number increased with the age, was higher in situations of maintenance of health and cases of disease, in case of existence of chronic disease, in cases self-reported as in bad health conditions for men and regular health conditions for women. For the women the number was also higher for those not regularly using some primary care unit and those in return visits. Self medication and use of homeopathic medication were low

Exclusão financeira no Brasil: uma análise regional exploratória

Despite the fact that after the second half of the 1990s studies of financial exclusion have gained strength among the studies about poverty and regional and social inequalities, a few studies about this problem had appear in the Brazilian economic literature. The present work contributes to the debate by carrying out an investigation of the phenomenon of financial exclusion within Brazilian regions. The main hypothesis of the study is that of financial exclusion is not disassociated from the e space in which it happens. Through of the use of proxies, two dimensions of the financial exclusion has been studied: the access to financial services and the its suitability.financial exclusion, liquidity preference, banks, regional economics.
